Sunday at the Beach in Puerto Morelos

Family day is traditionally Sunday, but pretty much every day seems to be family day here. Sometimes the families don't arrive until 3pm on a weekday, but they use the beach a lot, bringing food, umbrellas, chairs, tables and hang out together. Everyday has been pretty perfect here, warm water, soft sand, sunshine and temperatures right where they should be. The beach is the place!

An Early Morning Walk to the Bakery

Shortly after sunrise is a wonderful time to be walking the beach, and going to get freshly baked bread makes it even better. We had been buying it later in the day, but after today I am changing my ways, fresh is best!

 The beach cleaner truck is getting things ready for the Sunday crowds.

 A family awaits the snorkeling boat to take them to the reef. The shadows were so long I couldn't get out of the picture.

 The one and only Panaderia in town. Opens at 8am, and I was reprimanded for entering before 8, apparently the doors are open for ventilation, not for early birds. 

 Great hours for a bakery.

Business is very good, by early afternoon there's a sign on the door saying they are out of bread and closed for day. Don't wait if you want some. Located on the main street with a median off the plaza where most of the restaurants are.

 Excellent whole wheat baguette, with peanut butter and jam, yummy...

2 small loaves, still warm, cost 20 pesos, or $1.57 according to my currency app.

Warm Glow: Dog, Flower, Beach

There is a warm glow to these images, and there's a warmth to Puerto Morelos that I am enjoying, too.

First Left after the Mangroves

About 3K off the main road coming into town, after the mangroves, take a left. Here's what you'll find on this street in Puerto Morelos.

Joe and I sometimes walk this way into town coming from our condo, it has an authentic feel to it, and makes for some interesting photos. 

 "I Wanna Pizza" a sought after restaurant in town, where we had dinner with the birders. 

 One of the larger tiendas in town, no fresh fruit or brown rice... Lots of chips and cookies.

We call this the hobbit house, very fanciful.

Something Old, Something New.

A step back in time, a few older things are still in Puerto Morelos that you don't often see in New England. Lots of VW bugs and buses from the 60's and 70's.

Something new, new construction. Many people start projects here, then they languish until more money is found. Sometimes it takes a few years, but why not set up a space to hang out anyway?

On new years day the beach was packed, the most people we've seen on the beach and in the water the entire time we've been here. The next day it was back to normal.

Happy New 2013 Year!

From beautiful Puerto Morelos, Mexico, on the Yucatan Peninsular.

 I love going to the beach with my towel, taking a snooze, looking around, going for a swim.

Sometimes I get to see some really great things, like these 2 boys playing in the sand, with pelicans flying in formation overhead, and a dog peeking through the gate. If I'm lucky, I even have my camera handy :-)

I used my new Olympus Tough TG-320 waterproof camera on a 'magic' setting. It makes stars!

The Birders Take off for their 2400 Mile Adventure

Our 4 birders left Puerto Morelos yesterday in search of beautiful birds, they had a long list of target birds, 49 hours of driving over 18 days, and many locations across Mexico. There are some links on the right side of my blog here, Luke's Blog and Birding Across the World,  that should have more info on the details of their trip, when they get to blogging. Depends on wifi availability where they stop. Last night they stayed in a tent, and we got an email when they were having dinner near Calakmul.

Getting it to all fit in the car...

 Jess and Keenan didn't waste any time getting their binos and finding birds once they got here a few days ago.

 Their last night here we had great pizza at 'I Wanna Pizza' in Puerto Morelos!

Dr Joe to the rescue! First he was doctor flashlight, checking Ian's throat often when it wasn't getting any better. Now he's become doctor shot, he gave Ian 4 shots in the butt at home before they all headed out. Keenan valiantly volunteered to give the last shot, that would be today. Novice Joe taught Keenan how to give the injection, and Ian helped mix the meds that went into the needle. For people who have never had to this, it went well. Ian said his butt wasn't any more sore than when the real doctor did it. Ian's on the mend, and doing well!

 All set to go, bye...

 Jess will be the one and only driver for the 18 day trip, good luck Jess!!

And they're off!!! I'll miss them.
